2020 is our 30th year for Village Flower baskets!
The program continues this year despite the Covid-19. The baskets were hung by The Garden Corner in June.
In 1990, Doug Oliphant, past Chamber president and a group of volunteers, brought the Village Flower Basket program to Lake Oswego. A volunteer committee has raised funds and hung flower baskets since then. Flower basket chair Julia Fowler has a 10-person committee and had more than 60 volunteers ready to hang baskets when COVID hit. “We found no scenario that allowed for volunteer citizens to engage in a hanging event while maintaining physical distancing. Our long-standing tradition of getting out before sunrise, on the opening day of Farmer’s Market, to install the baskets, would not happen this year.” Jonn Karsseboom, owner of The Garden Corner, has partnered with the Chamber for all 30 years of the program. He plants the baskets months in advance of the May hanging. His team champions the ongoing maintenance through the summer to keep the baskets blooming, healthy and lively. If that wasn’t enough, Jonn stepped in this year generously offering his crew to hang the baskets. This program, sponsored by the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, is funded by contributions through the LO Chamber Foundation. You can help support the flower baskets with a contribution online, by a phone call to 503-636-3634, or send a check to the LO Chamber Foundation, PO Box 368, Lake Oswego, OR 97034 or click here to donate online at www.lakeoswegochamber.com Some of this year’s flower baskets are pictured here, ready to be hung. Spot flower baskets throughout Lake Oswego on State, “A”, McVey, Kruse Way and Boone’s Ferry. Thank you to our local businesses that regularly support the Village Flower Basket program.
This program is financed by community contributions. These donations cover the costs of hardware, planting and watering throughout the summer months. You can make a tax deductible contribution to the Lake Oswego Chamber Foundation on this website. Each year the program has grown, more baskets are being hung and communities from all over the country are calling to find out how they can replicate the program. In 2003 the committee received its highest compliment as Lake Oswego won the prestigious “America In Bloom” award.
